Featured Artist – Pablo

Artwork by Pablo Lobato

How and when did you know that you wanted to become an illustrator?
When I knew you could earn money by drawing I immediately knew I wanted to do that.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everywhere: illustration books, photographs, TV, my daughter’s crazy ideas…

What type of environment do you prefer to work in? At home or in a studio? Listening to music?
Always listening to music! Actually that is the only requirement. I can work in my studio at home, but also in the subway, in a coffee shop, the park… anywhere, but I need my iPod!

As a working illustrator, do you still find time to create art for yourself?
Rarely, as I’m always so busy. When I have some spare time I rest, but if I have too much time I miss drawing, so I do some personal artwork. I draw in my vacations!!

What type of artwork do you have hanging in your home?
Illustrations of course! But made by colleagues, never by me.

What accomplishment so far in your life stands out as most important?
Selling Prince a portrait I did of him, then having him commission me to do a portrait of his wife. That was pretty exciting!

Who was the first illustrator that you noticed and admired?
Albert Uderzo, his work made me happy when I was a little boy.

How do you deal with negative criticism?
I get mad at first, but it usually makes me do things better, then I become happier.

What is your favorite way to get out of a creative block?
The most effective way for me is non-stop working.

Is there any one publication that you still have aspirations to see yourself in?
I have seen my illustrations in my top two publications, The New Yorker and Rolling Stone magazine, but of course I have always wanted to do some work for the Village Voice and New York Times. Who doesn’t?
