Featured Artist – Paul Blow
Artwork by Paul Blow
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
From the world around, old photographic albums, my journey to and from the studio, from half over-heard conversations and my young son’s perception of the world around.
What is your earliest memory of creating art? (or drawing as a child)
I did a fantastic drawing of John Travolta, from his days in Grease. I remember feeling so pleased – and it’s that feeling I try to capture even now.
What type of environment do you prefer to work in? At home or in a studio? Listening to music?
I work from a shared studio with other creative people, painters, sculptors and musicians. We occupy a large old Victorian rope making factory – so the studios are long, very long and flooded with great light. I listen to the radio when I’m working on final art, but when it comes to ideas I do need some silence so may walk about and do some juggling – and no I’m not thinking of changing career for the circus, it’s something about alpha waves and lateral thinking?
What type of artwork do you have hanging in your home?
We have lots of screen prints by the talented Jonny Hannah and lithographs by Mark Hearld.
What is your favorite way to get out of a creative block?
Strong coffee, juggling and staring at the blank white page until my eyes bleed?
What question do you wish an interviewer would ask you?
Can you fire juggle? The answer being ‘no, not yet but maybe soon’.
