Andrea Ucini created a cover illustration for Carey Business magazine on Zika virus. Carey Business is a publication of Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University.
Zika virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys, was discovered through a network that monitored yellow fever.
Identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, outbreaks of Zika virus have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific.
In July 2015, Brazil reported an association between Zika virus and Guillain-Barré syndrome. In October 2015, Brazil identified an association between Zika virus and microcephaly.
Ucini’s illustration of a mosquito targeting Brazil, accompanied a feature entitled, “Zika’s Costly Sting.”
