Joe Magee’s new work Tudorland is a series of new images commissioned by Shakespeare Birthplace Trust for the opening of a new eatery, Will’s Kitchen, located directly opposite the building in which William Shakespeare was born.
The work humorously looks at the people and the architecture of Stratford-upon-Avon. As a destination for tourists to connect with Shakespeare and his birthplace, the street itself becomes a site of performance and display. Multiple cameras capture valued moments of being in the town, observing, being observed and of course taking selfies. Visitors create their own new picture narratives to take home and frame themselves within the Tudor history of Stratford.
The work is displayed on a series of 4k screens, slowly moving through the series of six images.
Thank you to curators Simon Poulter and Craig Ashley, SBT creative programmer Louisa Davies and all at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
