Soy Boy

Artwork by Violet Lemay

As part of AGM’s Work for Free campaign, Violet Lemay created this book cover for Charlotte Schwartz, a law clerk and volunteer mediator for a court diversion program at Toronto’s City Hall. Charlotte and her husband Seth wrote Soy Boy to raise awareness about a genetic metabolic condition called “Galactosemia”, which affects roughly 1 in 60,000 people in North America—including their adorable little boy, Isaiah. About 75% of children with galactosemia do not make it past their first two weeks if the condition has gone undiagnosed. Thankfully ten-month-old Isaiah, a.k.a. “Soy Boy,” is healthy and happy, keeping Charlotte and Seth on their toes. Violet plans to continue working with Charlotte; over time “The Edible Adventures of Soy Boy” will be fully illustrated.

New York Baby

Artwork by Violet Lemay

Violet Lemay spent the summer illustrating several projects for Duopress, including “New York Baby: A Local Baby Book.” The cardboard book for small children features iconic sites of New York City, as seen through the eyes of adventurous babies. The final few pages include fun activities and tips for parents. “New York Baby,” written by Puck, is the fourth of five books created by Puck and Violet thus far, with many other joint projects planned to come. “New York Baby” is now available at Barnes and Noble.

Swell – a year of waves

Artwork by Tina Zellmer

Tinas lovely map illustrations are part of a new book by chronicle: ‘swell – a year of waves’

The book collects the best new wave photography. Beautiful, simple, universal, the photos trace four different swells as they hit beaches around the world. Essays on the nature of wave generation and illustrated swell maps engage the armchair wave watcher. Designed to retail beautifully in the specialty markets, Swell is a substantive, lovely gift for anyone with a vetted interest in coastline and the beach.

Doodle New York, for duopress

Artwork by Violet Lemay

Violet Lemay’s third collaboration with duopress, “Doodle New York,” is now available for pre-order at amazon.com. A must-have for lovers of the Big Apple of all ages, the activity book offers 120 pages of fun doodling activities stemming from iconic New York imagery: everything from the Statue of LIberty to the Anthora (those classic blue-and-white coffee cups you get at Greek diners). Violet’s ten-year-old son Gray Fruisen contributed as well! He made five drawings of his favorite NYC buildings. The book contains several QR codes with links to additional drawings, coloring pages and activities at duopress.com, including young Gray’s five renderings. “Doodle New York,” which will be widely available this spring, is the first in a series of similar city doodle books which dupress will continue to release in the fall of 2012 and beyond. As a result, Violet is quite busy researching and assembling ink drawings of various cities throughout the world.
