Marie Wolf was commissioned by Nature to create an editorial illustration exploring how authorship and responsibility are changing as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in scientific research and publishing.
Rather than focusing on whether AI itself should be considered an author, the article looks at a broader question: how credit is assigned when research is shaped by many visible and invisible contributors, while accountability still rests with human authors.

Marie developed a visual metaphor around a typewriter whose keys are supported by multiple figures: Some human, some representing AI, while the named author remains prominently positioned behind the machine. The image reflects the collaborative and often hidden nature of scientific work, while making the tension between contribution, recognition and responsibility immediately legible.

Bold graphic shapes and tactile analogue textures give the piece a clear editorial presence and translate a complex debate into a concise, memorable image.
