Daniella Ferretti / Financial Times Weekend / The Book of Records by Madeleine Thien
Daniella Ferretti was asked to create an illustration for Life & Arts section of the Financial Times Weekend.
The image accompanies a review of the The book of Records by Madeleine Thien.
The novel is the story of Lina and her father, who arrived at an enclave called the Sea, a staging-post between migrations, with only a few possessions, among them three volumes from The Great Voyagers encyclopedia series. They live in isolation on an island facing environmental collapse. As Lina records their daily life and reflects on memory, history, and loss, she engages in imagined conversations with Spinoza, Hannah Arendt, and Du Fu, who represent philosophy, political thought, and poetry.
For the final illustration, it was decided to work with the sea, books and the 3 characters mentioned above as the main focus. The image was developed for the digital and print versions of the article.
