Esteban Plazibat / The Barcelonian / Across the pond

Esteban Plazibat

Esteban Plazibat has created the first animated cover for The Barcelonian, a very special collaboration with this illustration collective that pays tribute to the city of Barcelona, Spain.

Esteban’s cover references Argentinians in Barcelona, who make up the largest immigrant community in the city. Hence the title “Across the Pond”, a common phrase used to refer to those who cross the ocean to move to another continent.

The illustration explores several themes simultaneously, which is why the artist chose to use a grid format and include various scenes: the figure of Messi, mate, asado, the typical flag hanging from balconies, and a depiction of how much Argentinians love to talk (something you’ll understand if you know one).

The Barcelonian has featured over 250 illustrated covers. For number 268, released this week, Esteban wanted to go further, stand out, and add his special touch—so he chose to animate it, marking a before and after in the magazine’s cover history.
