Joe Magee / Boston Globe / Reinventing DEI

Joe Magee has been commissioned to illustrate a feature for Boston Globe on the subject of how organisations are responding to Donald Trump’s attempt to destroy DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives. Trump caused havoc by attacking systems designed to help include people from diverse backgrounds, threatening legal action against companies using, for example, ‘reverse discrimination’ when hiring employees – and withdrawing federal grants. Companies are regrouping and reframing (rather than eradicating) DEI efforts. The writer considers that there are actually some positives in a reset: The key is to recognize bias . Consequentially ‘diversity isn’t the goal, it’s the bi-product’ of that. EVERYBODY should be seen, valued and respected.
Joe proposed the concept of a ripped-up paper sheet containing a graphic (suggestive of equality and diversity) and hands attempting to reconstruct it.
