Nathan Hackett / Wall Street Journal / How to Get the Wine that you Actually Want in a Restaurant

Nathan was asked by the Wall Street Journal to illustrate for an article by Lettie Teague giving her readers advice on how to navigate the confusing social conventions of ordering wine at a restaurant but having to deal with a snooty sommelier.
This is a recurring feature column on wine in the Food and Culture section of the Wall Street Journal and in this issue the writer asks for advice from wine pro’s and connoisseurs after her recent experience in France from a judgemental sommelier.
Nathan illustrated the heightened character of the sommelier and the eager-to-please customer ordering wine while other restaurant diners watch. He balanced the composition with a colour palette that created the focal point of the watched table in the narrative and accented the ridiculousness of the sommeliers caricature so the illustration was made to reflect the writing and not be too serious.
