Be original! The art of illustration

Illustration/Toulouse-Lautrec

When the Moulin Rouge cabaret opened in fin-de-siècle Paris, artist, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a frequent guest at the nightclubs of Paris, was commissioned to create a series of posters for the cabaret.

His posters captured the effervescence of the Paris cabaret’s nightlife in vibrant color with rich blacks and hand-drawn lettering. Toulouse-Lautrec’s graphic style, dynamic drawing skills, and masterful use of contour, gesture, shape, and color elevated poster art to an art form.

Though his commercial work was looked down upon during the Belle Époch–when Paris was at the forefront of painting–today Lautrec’s illustrations are recognized as some of the finest ever produced.

There is no comparison between stock illustration and original art. Our up-and-coming and better-known illustrators bring exceptional talent and skill to each project they’re hired to illustrate.

I love to remind clients of the advantages of original artwork. As an art director, when you hire an illustrator, you give an artist the freedom to collaborate with you to fully develop a concept or campaign. We all know what magic happens when creating something original.

The right illustration can enhance an ad campaign or an article and add meaning. It becomes essential when identifying and promoting a brand or message.

Contrary to popular opinion, commissioning original illustration doesn’t have to cost more. The illustrators at Anna Goodson Illustration Agency rely upon assignments to show their talent and allow it to flower. Without them, original illustration would become hard to find.
