Will Banning Hate Speech Make Europe Safer?

The Wall Street Journal has commissioned Joe Magee to illustrate a piece about the European Union’s clampdown on hate speech. The writer, Jacob Mchangama, points out the dangers: Censoring people often increases their appeal, and far right extremism is party fuelled by repression of opinions. “If history is any guide, hate speech laws in Europe and elsewhere, however well intended, will ultimately hurt the people they are meant to protect.”
