Biography Interview

Argentinian illustrator, Pablo Lobato, began his career as a graphic designer after studying design at the National University of La Plata in Argentina. For the first five years of his career, he created editorial design for magazines. He then shifted his focus to illustration. Since joining the Anna Goodson Illustration Agency, his illustration career has taken off. Lobato’s bold and colorful portraits capture his subjects with verve and vitality that keeps his fans wanting more. Whether Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner for The New Yorker, Alec Baldwin and Steve Harvey for the Village Voice, or Kobe Bryant and Lebron James for Nike, Lobato is front-page news.

Some kind of pop meets cubism, sometimes

What lights your soul on fire?
Music, Art, My daughters, My wife, My dog, My cat

What themes do you enjoy exploring?
People. Animals I like to discover what makes each individual unique

What techniques do you use?
Pencil, Vectors, prints, pencil again

How much of yourself and your own story can we see in your work?
Everything. My art is both the people Im drawing but also me, if you know how to see

Is there an unmistakable thread in your creative work?
Nope. I change all the time

What do you want to be known for?
I want to be known for being an illustrator who almost always do a spot on portrait

Which projects excite you most?
All related to music personalities

What is your dream gig?
The cover of an album. I know there isn’t albums anymore

Where, when and how do you best create?
In my studio at night. When everybody is sleeping

How has your style evolved since you started?
I think is more organic, something like a fluent geometry

What do you find most challenging in your practice or in the industry?
Satisfy a demanding Art Director is always a challenge. They make me a better illustrator

How as being an illustrator changed your life?
I don’t know. I have always been an illustrator

Name a tool you can’t live without!
None. If I don’t have a computer I can always use a pencil or ink. The only thing is my hands I guess, and brain

Tell us about a project you worked on that was meaningful to you as an artist.
I did the illustrations for the program of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame the day Prince, George Harrison, ZZ top, Traffic and more were inducted

What influences or inspires your art?
Tartakovsky, Picasso, Philip Burke, Sabat, David Cowles, Nine, Petorutti

What would you tell your younger self?
Keep on drawing!

Why do you think art speaks louder than words?
Because you don’t have to think. Art is feeling. Goes directly from the eyes to your heart
