Une entrevue avec

Van Saiyan

Can you recall the first time you realized you were going to be an illustrator? What were your earliest impressions?
It seems to me that it was in my summer holidays with my grandparents. They gave me markers, sheets and comics and I just thought…this is dope… I have been drawing since my childhood and my elementary school notebooks were always full of drawings.

Who or what influenced your art when you were young?
Comic artists from USA. Jack Kirby, Neal Adams… Reading comic books all the time was one of my favourite hobbies.

Do you remember what your first artwork looked like? Do you still have it?
I remember drawing cars and cabs when I was five and six years old. I don’t keep anything from those days nowadays but I did keep my teenager artwork. I was obsessed with superheroes and science fiction.

Why did you choose illustration as your life’s work instead of, for example, filmmaking, law, or even medicine?
Although I also have studies as a primary school music teacher, I have always been interested in working in creative works because I consider myself as a creative person. I have realized what illustration means to me. On top of that, I really enjoy drawing and I feel happy in the process.

Did you study art in school?
Yes, I studied a Creative Illustration Degree at Esdip Madrid. It was my first serious contact with the world of illustration.

Where does your inspiration come from; your impulse to make art? Do you have a source for your ideas?
In recent years, I have been training my brain to think about creative ideas at any time. Some of my inspiration comes from vintage comics and advertising from the 50’s, 60’s, 80’s…

How would you describe the process of creating art?
For me, creating art is like breathing. It is the need to express your ideas and communicate with others. It is the way that my thoughts come to life.

If you could do something else, other an creating art, what would it be?
I’m also a musician. I play the electric guitar and I’m a singer too. Therefore, music is another way of expression for me, although I’m focusing more on illustration nowadays.

Do you remember your first set of paints, pens, or markers?
Yes, I was five years old. My first memories about it were at home with my parents and at nursery school. I absolutely loved to color and to draw cars.

If you could look back or forward 100 years, do you think the life of an artist was or will be better than today?
We must keep in mind that we are living in a world constantly becoming more visual and the new ways of working and jobs are increasing the importance of illustration these days. I think the life of an artist will be better than today, but my point is, it depends on the culture of each country at the same time.
